18 dead, 2 missing as bridge collapses in Kano

At least 18 people have lost their lives while two others are missing after a bridge along Riruwai in Doguwa collapsed due to heavy rainfall.

 

The deceased were said to be passing on the bridge when the incident happened yesterday evening.

 

A Facebook user, Mukhtar Sagir Dambatta made the post in his personal account announcing the death of his relatives.

 

In an interview with SAHELIAN TIMES, Mukhtar said almost all the passengers including a father and his four sons who happened to be his relatives have died.

 

“They were on their way back to home after they paid a Sallah visit to relatives in Doguwa and among the five victims, two are still missing in the river, ” Mukhtar said.

 

According to him, “the remaining victims are still missing in the river but the neighboring community are currently searching for their bodies.”

 

He said 18 bodies of the victims had been recovered from the river and have been buried according to Islamic rites.

 

When contacted by SAHELIAN TIMES, the Kano State fire Service Public Relations Officer said they didn’t receive any news concerning the accident but he would get back to us if the information reaches them.
