37-year-old becomes 1st IT Professor in Sule Lamido University

SULE LAMIDO UNIVERSITY APPOINT 37 YEAR GUJUNGU BORN Nasir Faruk AS PROFESSOR OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

 

Dr Nasir Faruk was an associate Professor of Telecommunications in the Department of Telecommunication Science, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He received the Ph.D degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University of Ilorin, Nigeria, Masters of Science in Mobile & High Speed Telecommunication Networks with distinction from Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK, and Bachelor of Science in Physics with first class honours from Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil, Kano State, Nigeria. Dr. Faruk was a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Communication and Networking (COMNET), School of Electrical Engineering, Aalto University, Finland where he lead the group that propose an energy efficient self-backhaul solution for future Heterogeneous networks. The output of the work was published in Elsevier, Energy Journal which is rated No. 5 on the Scimago Global Energy Journals.

 

In 2018, Faruk was awarded the best researcher of the year in the University of Ilorin with a prize of brand vehicle. This is the highest award received in the University. In the same year, he was listed among the 100 leading Telecom & ICT personalities in Nigeria by the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON). He received numerous merit and recognition awards including Jigawa State Government Award of Academic excellence by the Jigawa State Scholarship board. He has also served as Deputy Director of JUPEB in the University of Ilorin and also Ag. Director of ICT, the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology, in Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa. He received numerous research grants and fellowships. From 2013-2020, he attracted 35 different grants from within and outside the country. Among were from the University of Ilorin, Federal Government of Nigeria, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), LARUS foundation, Covenant University, Center for Research, Innovation And Discovery (CUCRID), AFRINIC, Dynamic Spectrum Alliance, Extensia Ltd, IEEE, IMC Worldwide Limited Ltd, UK and so many other companies.

 

Dr. Faruk has served as Technical Program Committee Chair and member of numerous local and international conferences. He has author/co-author of over 100 scientific publications. So far, he has attended 40 conferences and summits spanning over 20 different countries. His research outputs have been published in top rated journals such as IEEE Access (Q1), Energy, Elsevier ); Measurement, Elsevier (Q1), Data in Brief , Elsevier (Q1); JESTECH, Elsevier (Q1); IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation, IET (Q1); Heliyon, Elsevier (Q1), BBE, Elsevier (Q1), JoE, IET (Q2); Cogent Engineering, Taylor and Francis (Q2); SCIENCE CHINA Information Sciences, Springer (Q1); Green Energy and Technology, Springer (Q3); LNCS, Springer (Q2), Iran J Sci Technol Transaction of Electrical Engineering, Springer (Q3) and many other reputable outlets such as the Hindawi.

 

Dr Faruk was a fellow of the AFRNIC (African Network Information Center), he was also 2013 FIRE (Fund for Internet Research and Education) grant award winner. Dr Faruk has been very active in the Internet policy making process of AFRNIC, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), ISOC (Internet Society) and other players in the internet eco system. He is very active member of the open Internet Policy Development Process (PDP) and Resource Policy Discussion (rpd) mailing list. He is the current Co-Chair of Infrastructure, Access and Connectivity Working Group of Nigeria Internet Society.

 

Dr. Faruk is currently the Managing Editor for the International Journal of Information Processing and Communication (IJIPC) a publication of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, Nigeria, Consulting managing Editor of Sule Lamido Journal of Science and Technology (SLUJST) and was the Guest Editor for the ILORIN Journal of Computer Science and Information Technology (ILJCSIT), Guest Editor for the Special Issue on 5G Technological Advances and Disruptive Innovations for Emerging Markets, Mobile Information System, Hindawi, 2016 and also Lead guest Editor Special Issue on Application of Computational Methodologies in Spectrum Measurements and Mining, Hindawi, 2021. His research interests lie in the areas of Terrestrial Radio Propagation, heterogeneous networks, Spectrum management, energy efficiency of Heterogeneous networks and. Recently, he developed interest bioinformatics and also application of nature-inspired computational methodologies in radio propagation, areas that he has already published many articles in top rated journals since 2019.

 

He is a member of many professional bodies this includes: the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET), Internet Society, Society of Digital Info and Wireless Communications and International Association of Engineers (IAENG), Nigeria Institute of Physics (NIP) and Nigeria Computer Society. As a young researcher, according to Google Scholar, he has achieved an H index of 17, i10th index of 34 as of June 2021, and his works have been cited nearly 900 times.

 

Dr. Nasir faruk may be the youngest professor from, gujungu, Taura local government, or the youngest from Jigawa state or northern Nigeria.
