The bodies of five migrants out of 16 are missing after a boat sank trying to reach Panama on Monday.

While confirming the incident, Colombia’s rescue workers said nine of the migrants were rescued and the bodies of two migrants were recovered from the wreck, while five were still unaccounted for.

AP News reported that the migrants traveling through the Uraba region are mostly trying to make it to the United States.

Many of them come from Cuba and Haiti, but also African and Asian migrants often frequent this route.

The Municipal Government had earlier announced that 28 migrants were on the sunken boat, adding that thousands of undocumented migrants risk their lives to cross the gulf each year on small boats.
