7 girls drown after boat mishap in Jigawa

Reports coming in from Jigawa State say seven girls have died after their boat capsized on Thursday night.

The incident took place while they were trying to cross a river on their way back from a Maulud celebration in Gasanya.

Records say the boat was carrying 12 people when it capsized in a river between Auyo and Kafin Hausa Local Government Areas, killing seven and five narrowly escaping.

The victims were on their way back to their hometown of Gafasa in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area of ​​Gasanya in Auyo Local Government Area.

Mikail Jibril was one of the parents of the deceased, and he told BBC Hausa that the girls were no older than 11 to 12 years old.

The leader of Gafasa, Alhaji Adamu Abdullahi said they had already been buried.

In May this year, more than 100 people were killed in a similar boat accident near the town of Warah in Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria.
