The management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has appealed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to urgently restore electricity supply to the facility after a recent disconnection reportedly led to the death of patients in critical care.
In a statement signed by the hospital’s Head of Information Unit, Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, AKTH expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of lives, noting that the power outage disrupted life-support systems and other essential medical equipment.
The hospital said it has been making regular payments to KEDCO from its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and also spends part of its resources on diesel to power backup generators.
The management of the hospital stressed that it is already taking steps to defray the outstanding electricity bills that led to the disconnection.
“The management of AKTH appeals to KEDCO to support its healthcare delivery services to patients by restoring electricity to the hospital as it takes steps to settle outstanding bills,” Dutse stated.
AKTH is one of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary health institutions, serving Kano and neighboring states.
The hospital management warned that unless electricity is restored immediately, more lives could be at risk.
