Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has called for an amendment of the Federal Road Safety Corps Act to jail road traffic offenders in order to make roads safer for the citizens.

Amaechi made the call at the Jabi Central Park, Abuja, during the 2021 Easter Mega Rally saying that if road users were aware that they would go to jail for reckless driving or any other traffic offences, they would drive carefully.

The former Rivers state Governor said human factors, not bad roads, were the major causes of many road accidents in the country.

In his address, FRSC Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi said the rally, which was ongoing in the 36 states of the country, was to educate and sensitise drivers on safety measures as they conveyed people in and out of their stations during the Easter break.

Onyeyemi said in this year’s January alone, the corps recorded about 200 deaths from road crashes in midnight journeys.

He also urged that transport drivers be subjected to eye test and ensure that their visions were good enough to drive.
