Arabic students in Kano State have lamented about the failure of Kano State Government to settle the payment of their National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations fees for two years.

The students also complained about how this protracted delay has affected their education compared to some of their colleagues from non-Arabic schools who had already accessed their results and secured admissions into various tertiary institutions.

For the past 2 years, the affected students have missed opportunities of proceeding with tertiary education.

Muhammad Inuwa Muhammad, an Arabic teacher based in Kano, called on the government to look into the matter of paying the outstanding fees of the students.

” Looking at how prevalence of thuggery and phone snatching has increased, the government is making these students easy recruits into such menace.”

“Our field is related to Arabic and Islam as a religion, and we are all witnesses to how dangerous it is to leave students with a superficial understanding of the fields. To avoid making them an easy target of terrorist groups, there is a need for us to train up to universities and colleges,” he said.

Aisha Umar Muhammad said that she wrote her exams in 2019, but whenever she went to check her exams she would be told that the state government is yet to pay the examination body.

“I have the ambition to further my educations to the university, but my dream has been delayed for two years now. I calling on the Kano State government to please facilitate the release of our results,” she said.

Hassan Abdullahi who wrote his exams in Government Arabic Secondary School Dawakin Kudu, in 2019 cried about how some of his friends that wrote NECO and WAEC are already in the universities and colleges of education.

“Many of our friends have already furthered their education, while for us we don’t even know the status of our results. We are only left with the options of roaming about our streets,” he explained.

Abdulgafar Muhammad told our reporter that he also wrote his exams in 2020, but a year after the government is yet to settle NBAIS, which results in the delay in the release of their results.

SAHELIAN TIMES gathered that Kano State Government in August 2020 disclosed that it has earmarked the sum of N489million for settling of the National Examination Council (NECO), and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) examinations fees of about 29,126 students in the state.

However, the state Commissioner of Education Sanusi Muhammadu Kiru, in an interview with our reporter said that “all the outstanding fees for NECO and NBAIS have been approved by the State Executive Council.”

Kiru said that they are in the process of getting the money released.

He also noted that “we already paid over N200m to NECO last week, and we are now trying to settle NBAIS.”
