Nigeria’s armed forces have dismissed speculation that they should take over from President Muhammadu Buhari, as a result of worsening insecurity in the country.
In a statement released by Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, he said Nigeria’s army would continue to fully support Buhari led-Administration and will remain politically neutral and protect Nigeria’s democracy.
This is not the first time Nigeria’s armed forces have issued a statement backing President Buhari.
Nigeria is currently facing serious security challenges from Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast to herder-farmer clashes in the centre, gunmen operation in the northwest and recent separatist tensions in the southeast.
“Let it be stated categorically that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to the present administration and all associated democratic institutions,” Onyema Nwachukwu said.
He said, “We shall continue to remain apolitical, subordinate to the civil authority, firmly loyal to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari and the 1999 Constitution as amended.”
It will be recalled that last week, lawmakers had urged Buhari to declare a nationwide state of emergency after a month of almost daily attacks, kidnappings and killings in many part of the country.
Earlier today, President Muhammad Buhari presided over National security council meeting held at first lady’s conference hall in Abuja.
