The Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has accused the university’s management of financial impropriety.

The ASUU in a statement by the branch chairman and secretary, Muhammad Sani Gaya and Murtala Muhammad, respectively, carpeted the management of the university for admitting students beyond the university’s capacity and being interested more in quantity than quality of students in the institution.

The academic staff union said, “The University (management) has for long commercialized education in the University by admitting students far beyond its capacity; perhaps, in order to generate revenue rather than prioritizing academic quality.”

The union added that “the funds generated are not put to proper use.”

According to the statement, the University management recently took a bank loan of about N200million to purchase exotic cars that may be financed by students’ registration fees, while leaving a burnt female hostel unattended.

It also said, “The inadequacy of students’ hostel has forced a large number of students to stay off-campus.”

The ASUU also expressed its dismay at the information concerning the reported harassment of a female student by some unscrupulous elements at the university.

According to the statement, “The possibility of such incident has been long coming due to mishandling of students’ issues by the management of the university.”

SAHELIAN TIMES reported how students of the university were dismissed for sexually assaulting an Abaya-wearing female student of the University.
