A 200-level student of Yusuf Maitama Sule University (YUMSUK) who is frustrated by the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike has opened a “Shayi” joint business, in Dawakin Dakata, Nassarawa Local Government, Kano State to avoid staying idle.

The student of History and International Relations who introduced himself as Yusuf Auwal Barkum, in an interview with SAHELIAN TIMES  said that he regretted not establishing the business earlier than now.

“Shayi” joint is a local business where cooked Noodles, egg, tea and bread are sold, mostly in an open space with just a small tent with benches, table and chairs.

“We have a spot we used to sit and gist, many of us would drink tea, and most of the tea patronisers had to to go to far places to buy,” he said.

Barkum said that he was later convinced that he could develop a business next to the spot.

“I gathered loans from relatives and friends, combined it with what I had, and started operation,” he disclosed.

The student who established the business about 10 days ago told our reporter that it has already begun to make profits and that he has recently hired a helping hand.

” Now that the business is taking care of my needs and I have hired someone for whom I am paying N300 per day, I don’t depend on anyone for financial assistance,”  he added.

The student encouraged his peers to pursue a trade or business instead of remaining idle.
