At least seven election officials in Niger Republic have lost their lives on Sunday after their car hit a bomb and exploded.

The incident happened in the western part of Tillaberi state that is bordering with Mali according to the state Governor.

He however said three people were injured during the incident but he was not sure whether the attack was directed to their car.

“I got the news earlier today at around 11am that seven election officials have lost their lives after their car hit a bomb” according to the Governor Tidjani Ibrahim.

He said the deceased were election officials who were employed by the country’s electoral board, CENI.

Today, the people of the Republic of Niger are voting a new President in a runoff election set to mark the first-ever transfer of power through the ballot box in the country.

Unlike the first round where 28 different candidates contested, the second phase of the poll will be contested between two strong candidates: Mahaman Ousmane of RDR party and Bazum Muhammad from ruling party, PNDS.

The election is coming at a time when the country is struggling with insecurity especially on country’s border with Nigeria from south-east and its border with Mali.
