Reports from Imo state confirmed that gunmen attacked the Owerri Correctional Prison in the state capital and freed over 1500 inmates.
They also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters located in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.
The gunmen, who according to report, operated from 1am till 3am on Monday freed all the suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.
Some residents said the gunmen sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities.
It was reported that the gunmen used explosives devices such as dynamites.
The Imo state police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks and assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the matter.
