Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the head of World Trade Organization, WTO.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala is now succeeding the Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, who left the WTO before the end of his term in August.

She is the first female and first African ever to head the organization.

Last week, the last contender, the Korean Minister, stepped down and Mrs Okonjo-Iweala had become the lone candidate for the job.

The organisation, in a statement titled, ‘WTO General Council to consider appointment of next Director-General’ posted on its website on Tuesday, February 9, said a special meeting of its General Council will hold on February 15.
