President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday be in Kano on an official visit, Sahelian Times has exclusively gathered.

Despite an advisory from the Kano state government for the president to shelve his planned trip to the state on Monday, the president has decided to ignore the request.

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Saturday, wrote President Muhammadu Buhari, asking the president to postpone his visit to the state. Mr Ganduje said his request follows complaints by Kano residents over the hardship being faced in getting the new naira notes.

The governor said lawmakers from the state, political leaders, and the business community backed the decision to postpone the planned visit while urging for the extension of the deadline to return old naira notes.

However, an official with the Presidency who prefers not to be named revealed to this newspaper that Buhari will be in Kano for “official reasons”.

“No State Government has the authority to stop the president from visiting anywhere in the country, so, the president will in Kano on Monday to attend to official matters regardless of what the governors says.”

Asked what the “official matters” are, the source stated that the president’s itinerary is not yet finalized, but it will be made available in a statement that will be released soon.

The president was scheduled to visit the state between 30 and 31 January to commission some projects built by the Ganduje administration.
