Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich has handed control of the club to trustees of the Chelsea Foundation.

This comes in the wake of UK sanctions imposed on Russian entities following the invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich is a Russian oligarch, one of the groups sanctioned by the West.

Throughout the crisis, there had been doubts about Mr. Abramovich’s ability to retain control of one of the UK’s most successful clubs.

Abramovich on Saturday said, “I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.”

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

The move comes in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and almost 20 years after the 55-year-old’s takeover of the west London club.
