Dr. Peter Marks, Director of the United States Food and Drugs Administration’s (FDA) Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said at a press conference that the agency had received reports of allergic reactions in some states, including in Alaska.

In a report carried by Reuters, Marks has mentioned that a chemical called polyethylene glycol (PEG), which is an ingredient in the Pfizer vaccine, as well as the Moderna vaccine authorized just recently, “could be the culprit” causing the reactions. He inferred that allergic reaction to PEG could be far more common than previously understood.

These cases of allergic reactions reported among some people who took Pfizer vaccine in Alaska seem to be similar to the ones reported last week in Britain following shot of the vaccine. The British authority has already issued a warning to anyone with a history of anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions to refrain from taking the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

On its part, FDA has clarified that most Americans with allergies should be safe to receive the vaccine. However, it cautioned people who previously had severe allergic reactions to vaccines or ingredients in this particular vaccine to avoid getting the shot.

The agency has also mandated that appropriate medical treatments for immediate allergic reactions must be available when the shot is administered in case of an anaphylactic reaction.
