Federal Government on Tuesday announced that it might close its land borders again.

The border closure is to curb the increase in arms proliferation across the borders.

This was disclosed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu, in an interview in Channels TV.

Shehu said, the Federal Government is still studying the circumstances across the land borders, and if the problem persists, it would be left with the only option of closing the borders again.

He argued that the countries neighbouring Nigeria are making the fight against arms proliferation difficult for the country. “This is the reason why the president ordered for the closure of the borders,” said Shehu.

“Discussion is currently ongoing between Nigeria and its neighbouring countries, on the best possible way we can collectively curb arms proliferation, smuggling, and women trafficking. But it is proving to be difficult”, he said.

“This has forced the president to order for the closure of the land borders,” Shehu said.
