A Nigerian-born and US-based Professor of Mathematical Biology with the University of Arizona has been elected to the Class of 2022 Fellows of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics for his stellar contributions to mathematical biology, particularly the modeling of epidemics, and applications to other public health problems.
Gumel, who was born in Nigeria, earned a Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics from Brunel University in England and is now a professor at Arizona State University in the United States of America in Canada. He teaches at Bayero University Kano before moving to the United States.
Gumel, who finished school at the prestigious Science Secondary School Dawakin Kudu in 1985, was chosen among 25 other world-renowned mathematicians.
SIAM is a global organization based in the United States of America aimed at advancing the application of mathematics and computational science to Engineering, Industry, Science, and Society.
The award, titled ” SIAM class of 2022″ would be presented at its annual meeting scheduled to hold in July, 2022.
The Society was incorporated in 1952 to convey useful mathematical knowledge to other Professionals who could implement mathematical theory for practical, industrial and scientific use.
Amongst the recipient included Professor Hong kai Zhao, a Chinese national based at Duke University, who was posthumously honoured for his seminal contributions to scientific computation, numerical analysis, and application in science and engineering.
Since its incorporation, SIAM has been contributing to the promotion of research that will lead to effective new mathematical and computational methods and techniques for science, engineering, industry, and society.
It equally provides medium for the exchange of information and ideas among mathematicians, engineers, and scientists.
