Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek quipped he would be “happy to throw his hat in the ring” should Stan Kroenke decide to sell Arsenal amid intense fan protests against his ownership.

He made his interest known in a tweet which said “As a kid growing up, I’ve cheered for @Arsenal as long as I can remember. If KSE would like to sell Arsenal I’d be happy to throw my hat in the ring.”

The Spotify owner has a net worth of £4.3bn.

Thousands of Arsenal fans gathered outside the Emirates Stadium ahead of Friday night’s Premier League meeting with Everton to voice their disapproval of Kroenke, whose Kroenke Sports and Entertainment group owns the club, in the wake of their role in the doomed European Super League.

Arsenal were one of 12 founder clubs who announced the intended breakaway on Sunday night, but pulled out less than 48 hours later in the face of criticism from across football and beyond.

The club subsequently apologised for its actions and KSE will foot the bill for any costs involved in pulling out of the proposal, while Kroenke’s son, Josh, attended a virtual forum with fans on Thursday, promising to rebuild trust.
