9th March 2020, exactly a year today, Kano State Government announced the unfortunate decision of dethroning the revered Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II after almost 6 years on the throne. For whatever reason there was, it had happened and we are no more interested in knowing them. What we are interested as Kanawa (Kano people) is how we have missed him already.
Emir Sanusi has always been in the news for whatever reason you take it to be. For some, he is on the news for calling/telling the governments of the day to their faces. For others, siding with the voiceless masses against wicked governmental policies. However, he is on the news for calling on the establishment of marriage laws, which is a major triggering point for many of our conservatives.
He went to a Bayero University seminar talk where Scholars were discussing marriage issues and refused to sit on the high table. He didn’t only sit and watch, he later joined the conversation and presented his points logically and coherently and still being the Emir of Kano. For some others, he is on the news for doing such!
For pro-government minions, he is always on the news and dragging the honour of the throne. This however is one of the ridiculous blabbering on why Sarki Sanusi is on the news. Imagine someone having no relation whatsoever with the Masarauta but describing someone born into it and later becoming its custodian, as someone not aware of the honour or denigrating of the throne. It’s funny, ridiculous and even stupid!
With all said, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II will always be fresh in the hearts of real Kanawas as the emir who stood his grounds. Man who stayed with his people, Sarki who has always been unselfish and finally the alim (scholar) whom the throne has been deserving.
In addition, he is still in our minds because he is the highly learned Economist that knows how and why we are dealing with the current economic crisis. He is in our minds because he is the perfect orator we have that we could trust him to speak on our behalf anywhere in the world. He is still in our minds because he will never be a yes man to tyranny and wicked leaders He has stayed in our minds because of his ability to stand against social injustices in our societies, especially to women and children. He had stayed in our hearts because of his caring and support for education. He is still the emir in our minds because we trusted his Islamic knowledge to lead us during Friday, Eid and all sorts of congregational prayers.
Muhammadu Sanusi II will always be in our minds, for the rare gem he is and will always be. He will always be the emir we once had (hoping to have him again). He will forever be the King of our Hearts!
