Nigerians took to social media on Friday morning to express their displeasure over the latest fuel hike by PPPRA. The new hikes come barely a day after President Muhammadu Buhari promised to return fuel price to below N100 for Nigerians.

Eleven days after the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) promised there would be no price hike for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol in March, the price has hit N212 litre.

Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) says the guiding price of premium motor spirit (PMS), for March 2021 is 211.11 per litre.

The hashtags #FuelPriceHike, Buhari, PPPRA, 212, Deregulation, Dangote and other related terms have been trending since morning.

Kalu Aja, an Economist, tweeted “The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) announced late Thursday that the retail price for a litre of petrol for the month will be between N209.61 and N212.61.

In a deregulated market, why is a government agency setting prices?”

A popular online Doctor, Akporo Doctor, tweeted “Food prices before now have been out of reach for many Nigerians then you add #FuelPriceHike on top of it which will further drive up prices of things across board.

Yet, the average Nigerian’s earning has not increased.

How exactly do we want to bring people out of poverty?” He tweeted.

Muhsin Ibrahim, a researcher, said “No supporter of this government can convincingly defend some of its inhumane actions. From mass abduction to anti-mass policies, everything keeps falling apart. May Nigerians survive this bitter trial, amin.”

Former Senator from Kaduna, Shehu Sani, tweeted “Our Petrol price has now reportedly reached New York, 212.”

So far, there has been no official statement from the Presidency about the price hike.
