Kano State Government is set to introduce a law that will mandate psychiatric assessment for Islalmic clerics in the state.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Religious Affairs, Dr. Tahar Adamu, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service.

He noted that the state ministry for religious affairs will write and submit a bill to the legislatures on this issue.

According to the commissioner, “the law will make it mandatory for all clerics in the state to present psychiatric evaluation results before they can be allowed to preach.”

He also alleged that the danger of their teachings surpasses that of HIV infection.

While reacting to this proposition, the Chairman of Kano State Council of Ulama’a, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, said that the political leaders are more deserving of psychiatric evaluation.
