Islamic new year begins Tuesday

His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto has declared Tuesday, 10th August, 2021 as 1st Muharram 1443 AH.

This is contained in a press release by Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs which says, “His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Sultan of Sokoto, after considering the report of the National Moon Sighting Committee, has declared Tuesday, 10th of August, 2021 as the 1st day of Muharram, 1443 AH.”

The National Moon Sighting Committee of NSCIA had earlier reported negative moon sighting reports from across the country.

Saudi Arabia has also declared Tuesday as the first day of the new Islamic year following lack of report of moon sighting on Sunday 29th Thul Hijjah, 1442.
