Just in: Former Pope Benedict XVI dies at 95

Former pope Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95, the Vatican announced on Saturday.

Prior to his unexpected resignation in February 2013, Benedict served as pope from April 2005.
.Benedict is “extremely sick,” according to Pope Francis, who requested prayers from followers of the Catholic Church on Wednesday.

The Holy See Press Office said Benedict died in his residence at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery, which he had chosen as his residence after resigning in 2013.
