Kaduna LG Polls: low voter turnout, Electronic Voting Machine irregularities mar elections in Zaria

The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIECOM) is currently holding the local government elections after three postponements.

On Friday, 3rd September, KADSIECOM announced that the elections would not hold in 4 out of 23 local government areas due to the insecurity.

Sahelian Times reporter in Zaria has observed high voter apathy in the ongoing Local Government elctions in Zaria.

Although there is restriction of movement from 12am to 6pm, people are moving about their businesses without much interference.

The elections, however, are not going smoothly without hinderance. There were complains of disfunctional Electronic Voting Machines (EVM)in some areas.

Around noon, one Malam Shehu, a resident of Limancin Kona, said, “28 machines out of the 32 machines in my ward are not functioning.”

Another resident, Aliyu Matata, reported that the EVMs in some wards in Gyallesu were not charged and there was no ink.

In Igabi ward, Igabi Local Government, there were reported cases of ballot snatching by reported thugs.
