Kano State Film Censorship Board has declared the director of Kannywood’s “Makaranta” wanted due to its “immoral content.”

In a text message to SAHELIAN TIMES, the board’s executive director, Na Abba Afakallah, confirmed the development.

The decision was made after the filmmaker failed to respond to the board’s invitation pertaining to the film.

According to him, the film director promised to appear at its office in the new year in December but has yet to do so.

He said the board’s opposition to the project was due to its ‘immoral’ content and the fact that the project did not get the body’s approval.

“The truth is that the whole process of that film did not get the backing of the board. Even the promotion video currently circulating ought to have been vetted by us. That way, we can say remove this part or that, but the filmmaker did neither of that,” he said.

“Since he did not answer our invitation, we’ll take the next step because our board is about preserving the religion and culture of Kano and we won’t allow anyone to destroy that for us.”

Students were seen in a school environment in the film’s recent less-than-three-minute trailer of the film by the paper.

In one scene, a female student was telling another about ‘Jima’i,’ which means sex in Hausa.

Another female student was seen in another scene announcing that she was pregnant, with her colleague promising to assist her in dealing with the situation.

The trailer’s final scene depicted the students in a typical party setting, with male and female colleagues dancing together.
