Kidnappers to face death sentence, life imprisonment for rapists in Kebbi

Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has assented a law that ordained life imprisonment for rapists and made kidnapping a capital offence.

In a statement signed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of the State, Hajiya Rahmatu Adamu Gulma, says kidnapping will be tried under Section 247 which specifies death sentence.

Hajiya Gulma said that rape cases are to be tried under Section 259 sub-section 1 of the code under which offenders will face life imprisonment.

“The statement indicates that Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, this Thursday, 28/1/2021 assented to the laws as follows; the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2021; the Justice Law 2021; the Model Penal Code Law 2021 and a law to repeal and to re-enact law No. 3 of 2002, the establishment of Kebbi State College of Nursing Sciences, Birnin Kebbi, 2021.”

” The rest are, a law to repeal and to re-enact law No.: 10 of 2004, the establishment of Kebbi State College of Health Technology, Jega, 2021; and a law to repeal and to re-enact law No.: 5 of 1993, the establishment of Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu, 2021.”

The Commissioner further announced that, Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu in December, 2020, assented to Administration of Collection of Revenue due to the state and local government councils in Kebbi state, 2020.

She explained that, with the coming into law of the administration of criminal justice, there would be less custodial sentencing as the courts would have the flexibility of non-custodial sentencing for minor offences.

The Attorney-General made it clear that our prisons would therefore be less congested and there would be accelerated as well as speedy trials of criminal offences.
