Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, said those that killed people in the recent ethnic conflict in Oyo state must be brought into book and prosecuted.

In his interview with Hausa service of BBC, Lawan said apart from paying compensation to the victims who lost their lives and properties the state government also need to investigate the perpetrators and handed them over to relevant authorities to face the consequences of their action.

“What happened in Oyo and other Southwest region was regrettable, I cannot say it was the state Governors fault but they’re the chief securities in their States” said Lawan.

He added that “Some statement made by some Governors worsened the situation and the perpetrators thought their state Governors were behind them”.

Lawan said the members of the Senate debated on the matter and they condemned the statement made by some Governors which instigated people to attack innocent people.

He said President Muhammad Buhari sat with the state Governors and he told them that his government will not tolerate inciting statements.

“He told them that Nigerian constitution gives every citizen a right to live in everywhere he likes. He said he will not tolerate chasing citizens away from any part of the country talk less of giving them an ultimatum”.
