A resident of Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State has divorced his wife who gave birth to three daughters.

The Chief Imam of the community, Tanimu Musa, disclosed this while speaking at a one-day Stakeholders meeting titled ‘Preventing Gender Based Violence in Kaduna Communities’.

The meeting was organised by African Media Development Foundation (AMDF) with the support of Rise up, a project of Public Health Institute (Johns Hopkins University USA).

The cleric condemned the man’s action, which he said qualifies as gender-based violence.

He said the two major religions in the country, Islam and Christianity, are against all forms of domestic violence.

The Imam said the woman’s only offence was giing birth to three girls and that the husband preferred a male child to be assisting him on the farm.

“The woman and her husband lived in a village in Chikun LGA, but now moved to my community in Unguwar Rimi after the husband divorced her for simply delivering three daughters.

“She told me, the husband preferred a male children because they are farmers and boys are needed on the farm,” he said.

He explained further that gender-based violence still happens in communities and all stakeholders must rise up against it even though there is improvement now as more women are enrolled in schools.

He urged parents to empower their girl child through education so that they can be economically independent in future.
