Renowned Kaduna State-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Halliru Maraya, has said that those campaigning for a Muslim-Muslim ticket are acting contrary to Islam’s tenets.

According to the cleric who spoke in an interview with BBC Hausa, when a leader is a Muslim, his deputy should be a Christian, and when a president is a Christian, his deputy should be a Muslim.

He therefore warned that a Muslim-Muslim ticket would certainly lead to strife and discord betwen the country’s northern and southern regions.

“The proper thing to do in Islam is to bring everyone along, and Islam calls on all Muslims to give justice even to non-Muslims,” he stated.

He stressed that Nigeria needs competent and just leaders who would do justice to all manner of people regardless of religious considerations.
