NCC invests over N500m in telecom research– Danbatta

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has invested more than N500 million to fund telecom-based research across various Nigerian universities.  

The Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, while disclosing this in a Regional Roundtable with Academia, industry, and other stakeholders in Kano also noted that the NCC is set to build two centers of excellence to promote research and development in the country.

According to the EVC, the roundtable titled “The path from Innovative Research to Commercialization of Viable Prototypes” was aimed at chattering a way forward for the research outputs sponsored by the commission. 

“The idea is how do we commercialize the prototypes, about 10 of them, so that these prototypes can be deployed to improved delivery of telecommunications service, provision of those services as well as improve the quality of those services. This is the reason why we are here,” he said.

Danbatta further noted that the commission is exploring opportunities through research and development to improve the national system of innovation in the country. 

He said the commission will continue to fund research in universities to foster development.

Speaking further, Danbatta noted that he is confident that the synergy between academia, industry, and regulators, would accelerate innovation, industry growth, and sustainability.

Commenting on his recent election into the Nigerian Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) Governing Council, Dannatta solicited the support and prayers of the public to deliver the task, which signpost of his remarkable contribution to the growth of the engineering profession in the nation.
