Youths in northern Nigeria have defied the threats of the Department of Security Service (DSS), and stormed the streets of major cities to protest against the prevailing insecurity that plagues the region.

The DSS wanted to desperately sabotage the planned protests by detaining some of the prominent organizers last week.

SAHELIAN TIMES reported about how the #SecureNorth protests leaders were forced to suspend the movement’s activities across the region, following threats by the DSS.

However, despite the intimidations, another mass protest was organised on Thursday under the leadership of the former leader of Bring Back our Girls (BBOG) group, Haj. Aisha Yesufu.

In an interview with our reporter, Barrister Abba Hikima, one of the activists that led the protest in Kano, confirmed that they would not be intimidated and insisted that the protest shall continue as planned.

“They sent thugs and DSS operatives to the venue on Tuesday night, but we were not intimidated. We stood our ground, and I told them we would do it again,” Hikima asserted.

Frequent killings of innocent lives by bandits in northern Nigeria have continued to rise, leading to major roads and some communities becoming increasingly dangerous for travellers and inhabitants.
