A post by Sahara Reporters has sparked widespread condemnation and outrage from Muslims, in which the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has said there is nothing wrong with Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, seeking asylum in another country where his safety can be guaranteed.

The Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, said Igboho is like Prophet Muhammed who fled Mecca to Medina over persecution.

This has led to a boycotting campaign against Sahara Reporters for publishing the disrespectful comparison that might incite harsh reactions from Muslim faithfuls. There have calls to unfollow the page and to report both the post and the page by different individuals and religious groups.

The President’s Personal Assistant to New Media, Bashir Ahmed, wrote, “The statement by Afenifere comparing our beloved Prophet (PBUH) to Sunday Igboho and reported by Sahara Reporters is condemnable.

The two can never compare in any way.

I strongly protest and condemn the statement and ask all the meaningful people to also condemn and report it.”

Thousands of Muslims have embarked on reporting the pages of the news platform calling for its total shutdown.
