The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, has distanced himself from the controversy of Muslim prayer mats carrying his campaign pictures.

Obi said that the use of his pictures on prayer mats by his support groups was “misguided.”

The former Governor of Anambra State wrote on his Twitter handle that the mats did not come from his campaign team.

“The inclusion of my picture on the praying mat by a support group was misguided, even with the best of intentions,” he tweeted on Friday.

“It didn’t emanate from my campaign team. I have deep respect for the Muslim faith and indeed, for every other religion. We will never mock any faith, ethnicity or gender. We are one Nigeria,” he asserted.

Pictures of the mats gained widespread attention on social media and drew criticisms from a variety of people, especially Muslims whose faith forbids the placement of images on objects used for worship.
