Police arraign 25 year old over social media fraud in Kano

Kano State Police Command has arraigned a 25-year-old Aliyu Hussaini Salisu before a magistrate court allegedly over social media fraud.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Kano Police spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

According to the statement, on November 9th, a woman in Yelwa Shandam, Plateau State, reported that one Facebook user with the account name “Aliyu Hussaini Salisu” displayed textile materials such as Lace, “Shadda,” and so on and advertised them for sale on his Facebook page.

“She ordered fourteen (14) different textile materials for One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000:00) and paid through Unguwa Uku Motor Park Kano.”

Instead of sending the materials, he packaged rag and tattered Mosquito Nets and sent them to her,  according to the statement.

The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, raised and directed a team of detectives led by DSP Mutari Jibrin Dawanau to apprehend the perpetrator.

‘’The team immediately swung into action and arrested the suspect, one Aliyu Hussaini, ‘m’, 25 years old, of Hotoro Quarters Kano, at Unguwa Uku Motor Park, Kano.’’

‘’The suspect was caught in possession of a Laptop Computer and a Mobile Phone while trying to defraud another suspecting victim.’’

According to the statement, the suspect revealed during interrogation that he specialized in using Whatsapp and Facebook to advertise Textile Materials, collect people’s money, and then either block their social media accounts/phone numbers or send them tattered rags.

He also admitted to using the same method to defraud 37 people from various parts of the country, particularly females with a passion for designed materials.

‘’ After his arrest, Thirty Seven (37) persons have lodged complaints and reported that the suspect defrauded them the sum of One Million and Fourteen Thousand Naira (N1,014,000.00). The suspect has today, 22/11/2021 charged to Senior Chief Magistrate Court, No. 26 Ungogo Kano for prosecution.”
