Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the abduction of children from an orphanage in Abuja.

Eyewitnesses have corroborated that the unfortunate incident occurred during the weekend, in the late hours of Saturday, when unknown gunmen stormed an orphanage located in Naharati village, Abuja, and abducted 8 orphans.

However, the Nigerian police said only 6 children were abducted and they are in the process of rescuing them.

The responsible government agency has since ordered the closure of the orphanage to ensure the safety of the remaining children.

Recent reports have shown that the activities of kidnappers have become very rampant in the area. Three residents of the community were abducted just last 3 weeks ago, but later freed after ransom was paid.

In an interview with BBC, a resident of the community has alleged that a week hardly passed by without a report of kidnappers invasion.

Banditry and kidnapping have lately become rampant in the northern part of Nigeria, adding to the already precarious security situation in the country.
