Real Madrid stadium fire brought under control

Real Madrid’s stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu, was on fire on Wednesday night with smoke pictured billowing into the sky.

Video circulated on social media showed dark smoke rising from the roof of the famous ground in Spain’s capital, which is currently undergoing a £700m redevelopment.

Firefighters were quickly called to the scene to and the fire was quickly and effectively dealt with and Marca are reporting that there was no serious damage or injuries to the Bernabeu.

For now, the source of the fire at Madrid’s home remains unknown.

Madrid have not played at the Bernabeu in over a year as work is undertaken to refurbish the stadium. They took advantage of the coronavirus pandemic, and the fact games were played without fans, to accelerate the work. The work is expected to last at least two years.

In the meantime, they have been playing at their Valdebebas training ground at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium.
