The member representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has questioned the reason behind the outburst of the tributaries of the Tiga dam, in Kano.
Overflow of the dam last week submerged farmlands across the dam and caused the collapse of two bridges along the Tiga-Bebeji road, disconnecting a number of communities.
In the statement released by his media aide, Fatihu Yusif Bichi, Rurum made the disclosure during an impromptu visit to Tiga community in Bebeji Local Government, on Saturday to familiarize himself in the aftermath of the dam outburst.
During the visit, the former Kano State House of Assembly speaker said according to firsthand information he got from the victims directly affected by the overflow, some of the dam’s channels were blocked with approval of the Hadejia/Jama’are River Basin Authority.
Rurum also added that a bridge that connects Tiga town to neighboring villages is damaged and the 25-kilometer road was washed out by the deluge.
”The dam flood is a serious threat to the lives and livelihood of the people living in this vicinity. Even in Rurum town (where I come from), farmlands and communities have been badly affected by the overflowing dam,” he added.
Hon. Rurum therefore appealed to the Federal and Kano State Governments to as a matter of urgency come to the aid of thousands of residents displaced by flooding as a result of the overflow from the Tiga dam in Kano.
The lawmaker also promised to raise the issue at the plenary of the House of Representatives for investigation and mitigation of the damage when the house resumes from its recess.
