Soldier dies trying to rescue kidnapped victims in Zaria

Gunmen have killed a soldier in Zaria during a fire exchange with the men of the Nigerian Army and Intelligence Response Team (IRT), who were trying to rescue victims of abduction.

The incident occurred around 9 pm on Monday in a community called Mil Goma, opposite Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.

According to Aminiya newspaper, the gunmen raided the community and abducted a mother and her four children.

An eye witness that spoke to the newspaper said that the gunmen numbered about 30 were armed to teeth with heavy weapons.

The IRT response team and the men of the Nigerian Army immediately responded to a distress call and met the gunmen on the scene.

The team immediately engaged the gunmen and that resulted in a fire exchange which led to the death of the soldier, shortly after he was taken to a hospital.

The team has reportedly succeeded in rescuing the mother and her four children.
