Joint Action Committee of Non-Academic Staff Union(NASU) and of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities will commence a 14-day warning strike from October 5 to October 19, across Nigerian Universities.
Addressing newsmen after their joint congress held at the University of Lagos(Akoka), the chairmen of NASU and SSANU of UNILAG branch, Kehinde Ajibade, and Messrs Olusola Sowunmi, respectively said that the strike is general and will involve all public universities in the country.
A statement jointly signed by the National President, SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, and General Secretary, NASU, Peter Adeyemi, listed inconsistency in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System(IPPIS), non-payment of arrears of their earned allowance since 2012, and non-showing of seriousness in renegotiating their 2009 agreement.
Other issues mentioned in the statement are: non-payment of national minimum wage and retirement benefits to our members, as well as the non-payment of benefits to retired members, teaching staff usurping the headship of non-teaching units and neglect and poor funding of state universities.
“Please note that this warning strike is a prelude to a full-blown total and indefinite industrial action if the grievances highlighted above are not properly addressed,” the statement added.
The planned strike is coming in the wake of the federal government’s decision to reopen all schools including universities, six months after their closure in a bid to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
