Tribute to Haneefa: As a promising beauty passed on, lessons to be learned

A promising beauty indeed but the thought of an excruciating death of a child forced to swallow rat poisoning is beyond heartbreaking.

As a gloomy day descended on Arewa (Northern Nigeria), millions witnessed more millions mourning the tragic unfortunate manner in which Haneefa a 5 year old left this cruel world, the gruesomely disheartening violent way our little princess was ruthlessly butchered and murdered in cold blood after her abductors received a partial payment for the 6 million naira ransom they demanded.

Despite being a good ending for her being that she was just an innocent sinless child, the disgusting matchet meted upon her sinless soul remains utterly barbaric, alarming, and the cause of a great national despair, and abhorrent to us all.

Hence, Social Media is awash with calls for prompt justice for monstrous perpetrators of such heinous crimes as a deterrent apparently, to disallow it and perpetuate it, or foster better ways in eradicating reoccurring tendencies of these inhumane brutalities that is fast consuming our delicate society.

Consequently, the mastermind of the kidnapping who later mercilessly killed her confessed that they (alongside his accomplice) attempted to abduct her twice and that she refused to yield to the tactics of the culprits to join them in a tricycle the first time they tried kidnapping her. Eventually, the mastermind of the whole evil had to go get her himself where he succeeded.

Hence, despite the pain surrounding Hanifa’s exit, please let’s not forget to ponder on the lessons surrounding it to also avoid similar eventualities.

* Haneefa was a smart girl for them to have attempted to kidnap her twice using a tricycle. But, her abductors were smarter being that they are older and a desperate thief/criminal can go to any length. The Hausas would say, “Mai son abun hannun ka, ya fi ka dabara”, please correct me, if I am wrong.

* Haneefa’s parents might have taught her how to avoid strangers, but they didn’t do their homework well enough to help her watch her back by escorting her to and fro from school or having a trusted family member who will do the same in order to ward off criminal minds and protect her.

* Parents please, please, and please let’s know the whereabouts of our children. Let’s not get carried away by the worldly things we’re busy chasing at the detriment of our innocent children, thereby allowing them to stay perambulating or roaming around aimlessly whether on their way to school or otherwise, or even when they’re out of school which, is only going to make them vulnerable to evil-plotters.

Some things are inevitable, but we have to play our roles well as parents to absolutely absolve ourselves of blame.

May Haneefa rest in the highest level of paradise.

May the Almighty comfort her family, loved ones, and the entire nation during this discomfort of mourning our princess.

May the perpetrators of this evil face the full wrath of the law in no time.

May the Almighty guide and protect us all, and assist us in getting rid of these abominable criminalities.
