The Kano State Police Command has explained why it arrested a popular TikTok skit maker, Murja Kunya.
Murja was arrested by the police at Tahir Hotel in Kano on Saturday night while trying to book rooms for her guests who came from far and near for her much-publicised birthday bash.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa explained that her arrest was on the back of an order in September last year from a Sharia court, for the Kano State Commissioner of Police to arrest and investigate Miss Kunya alongside other TikTokers for corrupting the morals of the society.
Murja Ibrahim, while admitting to have been controversial and outspoken on the Social Media platform, blamed her alleged excesses on emotions she couldn’t control.
For example, she blamed a particular clip where she was seen raining insults on Nigerian leaders to frustration from a viral video released last year, where a group of terrorist were seen beating up captives from the Kaduna-Abuja train attack.
The 24 year old explained that on the allegation of mimicking immoral songs, she attributed her conduct to musicians like Ado Gwanja, who request that from her, in order to make their songs go viral.
While expressing her regret over her arrest, Murja pledged to stop her immoral actions and avoid being a negative example to others. She also urged other Social Media users to avoid provoking her by consistently casting aspersions on her.
A Kano State magistrate’s court had in November last year, sentenced two young men, Mubarak Isa and Nazifi Bala, to 20 strokes of cane and 30 days community service for making a TikTok comedy skit on the governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The defendants were convicted on two-count charge bordering on defamation of character and inciting public disturbance.
