Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and lawmaker representing Bauchi North, has said that many of his colleagues, including himself, support the move to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.
Bulkachuwa’s stance comes a few days after Senator Elisha Abbo, also of the APC, backed the move by opposition senators to impeach President Buhari over lingering insecurity. Opposition senators, mostly members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), walked out of plenary, last week and threatened to serve the president an impeachment notice should he fail to address the worsening insecurity across the country.
Speaking with Channels TV on Monday evening, Bulkachuwa said he was in full support of the impeachment move against the president because the legislative arm of government had done all within its power to ensure that the executive has what it needs to address the country’s insecurity, but there hasn’t been much to show for it.
“On that day, the senate went into closed session and it was at the closed session that these issues were discussed and without divulging so much, I can tell you that the majority of senators felt there was a need to initiate that action,” he said.
“It wasn’t a 100 percent unanimous agreement (ultimatum to impeach Buhari) per say, but majority supported it.
“It didn’t come to public knowledge because it was during a closed session. In the closed sessions, there are no journalists, not even staff. It’s purely a meeting of senators.
“What is happening is that in the legislative arm of government, we have tried all within our power except one thing. We have tried financing — making sure that the president has all he needs by way of budgeting.
Bulkachuwa said the lawmakers also tried to engage service chiefs and other security personnel to find out what their problems are and to find solutions, and also advise the President accordingly.
“We even tried engaging service chiefs and security personnel to find out what their problems are and when they divulge their problems to us, we try to proffer solutions and we go ahead to advise Mr President.
“We realised that all that has not actually worked — the security situation was getting worse.”
Sahelian Times had reported how the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, dismissed a motion on insecurity and a move to impeach the president. The dismissed motion was moved by the Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda of the PDP.
It would be recalled that opposition senators numbering over 20 walked out of plenary last week. They later issued the president a six-week ultimatum to tackle insecurity in the country or risk being impeached.
