The All Progressives Congress (APC) has postponed its presidential campaign rally in Oyo state scheduled for Tuesday due to naira scarcity and petrol shortage.

In a statement on Monday, the party’s spokesperson in Oyo, Olawale Sadare, the party will give the president time to address the concerns raised over the issues.

There have been protests in parts of the country — including Oyo state — over the scarcity of new naira notes and petrol shortage.

However, amid the development, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked for some days to take a “major decision” on the naira note scarcity.

“We need to allow President Muhammadu Buhari to work around the situation and ensure that normalcy returns, particularly as it concerns fuel and currency notes crises,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“At Oyo APC, we were convinced that it was necessary to go ahead with the event in order not to play into the hands of some antidemocratic forces who do not want the general elections to hold.

“We regret to announce the indefinite postponement of our presidential rally earlier slated for Tuesday.

‘The decision was taken in consideration of the prevailing challenges facing the nation.”

He also said the party will let the public know the new date as soon as the decision is taken.

The party also urged its loyalists to remain calm, and expressed optimism of victory in the general election.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the operations manager of a commercial bank in the Federal Capital Territory over allegation of hoarding N29 million of the new naira notes.

The anti-graft commission in a statement released on Monday said the operations manager was arrested after refusing to load the bank’s automated teller machines (ATMs) despite having N29 million in the vault.

“Before he was whisked away for further questioning, the operatives ordered the loading of all the ATMs and the payment of the stipulated amount across the counter to the delight of the distraught customers who had spent hours in queues without getting the new notes,” the statement reads.

“This discovery, which indicates sabotage of the government’s monetary policy by some banks, was made by the EFCC in continuation of the ongoing surveillance and visit to banks across the country to access their vaults and verify whether they were deliberately refusing to dispense the redesigned Naira notes.

“More than five bank branches were covered today by the operatives in Abuja. Similar exercises are ongoing in zonal commands across the country.”

The need to embrace Absurdism!

By Ahmed Tijjani Usman

Before the coming of religion our ancestors handle things according the norms and values of thier society(mainly in line with their traditional practices). They paid less attention to most of the metaphysical aspects of thier life. As they embraced religion, their tendency to seek answers to questions facing them, including those questions that have no objectively “true” answer began to improve.

Here are few of such questions which religions are typically centered on them. Questions like “Why are we here?” or “What is our purpose?” or “What happens after we die?” or “How do we separate right from wrong?” Though the last question battle with the existing morality of thier society but that doesn’t stop them embracing the religion.

Religion also provides comfort to them believing that when they die, they will go somewhere where they will be loved and an important part of a bigger universal plan. They choose to believe it and it brings them peace and even joy to feel that way. And the older they get the more important it is. Our ancestors lived happily with such beliefs.

Coming to our generation where sponsored, extremists and half-baked clerics are the ones with large followers brainwashing and inciting hatred to the soul of thier gullible followers to the extent one could hold the belief that if you didn’t side with his ideology you are an infidel. The teaching of such groups led to the creation of violent factions such as Boko Haram.

They dictate the dos and don’ts of our life including our economic affairs. Now that everything is against us, we go back to them for solutions and they told us to continue going the against world; the wise ones among us follow their way while the rest listened to them. Issues that matters and needs urgent attention to improve our lives were given inattention.

Gone are the days when clerics keep knowledge to themselves just because they opportune to go outside the society and study or inherited the books and other relevant materials from thier parents or close associates. This era of information give everyone opportunity to learn and unlearn, the book you think you inherited for than 100 years, someone can download it in less than a minute. The Fatwa you misinterpreted and deceived us with can be re-learn in different languages and some of us may even understand it more than you.

If you haven’t noticed, life is absurd in the North. We always strive to find meaning in the the things we do here, and the Northerners responds with cold indifference. This contrast, often made evident when senseless and meaningless tragedy occurs, is inherent to most people’s relationship to the North.

As Albert Camus said  “absurdity tends to drive people towards “revolt,” a feeling of rage and defiance towards the situation we’re in and a powerful drive to resist being broken by it.” The person who can do this without falling into despair becomes what Camus calls an ‘absurd hero.’ This encourages us to affirm a better existence.

Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean you should spend all your time contemplating how to make the world embrace the situation of absurdity. Albert Camus suggests that the rebel will embrace life for life’s sake and live with passion.  If you can’t be sure of meaning, then all that’s left to put stock in is the life you’re living. So why not do it passionately?
For his part, Camus enjoyed sports, going on date, drama and literature, and other simple pleasures outside of his work.

Naira redesign: El-Rufai, Matawalle, Bello drag FG to Supreme Court

0

By Aminu Kutama

The governors of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states have dragged the Federal Government before the Supreme Court, seeking a restraining order to stop the full implementation of the Naira redesign policy.

Worried by the effects the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s naira redesign policy is having on the residents of their states, in a motion ex-parte filed on their behalf by their lawyer, AbdulHakeem Uthman Mustapha (SAN), the three northern states are urging the apex court to grant them an interim injunction stopping the Federal Government either by itself or acting through the CBN, the commercial banks or its agents from carrying out its plan of ending the timeframe within which the now older versions of the 200, 500 and 1000 denominations of the Naira may no longer be legal tender on February 10, 2023.

The Plaintiffs in the suit are the three Attorneys-General and Commissioners of Justice of the three states, while the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), is the sole Respondent.

The Plaintiffs said that since the announcement of the new naira note policy, there has been an acute shortage in the supply of the new naira notes in Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara States and that citizens who have dutifully deposited their old naira notes have increasingly found it difficult and sometimes next to impossible to access new naira notes to go about their daily activities.

They also cited the inadequacy of the notice coupled with the haphazard manner in which the exercise is being carried out and the attendant hardship same is wrecking on Nigerians, which has been well acknowledged even by the Federal Government of Nigeria itself.

The Plaintiffs further maintained that the ten-day extension by the Federal Government is still insufficient to address the challenges bedeviling the policy.

Recall that over the weekend, the CBN Governor at a press conference held in Lagos insisted that that the apex bank will not extend the deadline for swapping old naira notes with the newly redesigned ones.

In the suit filed at the apex court, the Plaintiffs have also filed a motion on notice to abridge the time within which the Respondent may file and serve his Counter-Affidavit to this Suit and an order for an accelerated hearing of this matter.

The states are seeking a declaration that the Demonetization Policy of the Federation being currently carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria under the directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not in compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 and actual laws on the subject.

They are also asking the court to make a declaration that the three-month notice given by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Central Bank of Nigeria under the directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the expiration of which will render the old Banknotes inadmissible as legal tender, is in gross violation of the provisions of Section 20(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 which specifies that Reasonable Notice must be given before such a policy.

Nigeria has less than 100 cancer specialists —ARCON

Association of Radiation and Clinical Oncologists of Nigeria (ARCON) has revealed that Nigeria currently has less than 100 oncologists to cater to the medical needs of the country’s teeming population.

The President of the Association, Dr Nwamaka Lasebikan disclosed the figures in an interview with the punch on Sunday

Lasebikan said, “We have less than 100 oncologists in Nigeria and the reason I said so is that people leave every day. So, let’s just leave the figure at less than 100.

“Meanwhile, Nigeria needs a minimum of 2,500 to 3,000 clinical oncologists in the country.”

Lasebikan said Nigeria has only 13 radiotherapy machines in the country, while the President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Dr Adamu Umar said the machines owned by the government are frequently non-functional.

“In terms of the facilities, we have 13 centres with radiotherapy machines, with a total of 12 linear accelerators in the country. So, some of these centres only have Brachytherapy machines,” she said.

Umar said the dearth of oncologists was a major gap that needed to be closed.

Advocating for more cancer specialists in the country, he said “There is a need for manpower training.

He, however, hinted that the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehaire will inaugurate six radiotherapy machines in six tertiary health institutions.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Nigerian Cancer Society, Ekiti State Branch, Dr Abidemi Omonisi, has called on Nigerians to abstain from unhealthy lifestyles and practices that may make them susceptible to developing cancer.

According to the World Health Organisation International Agency for Research on Cancer, it is estimated that Nigeria recorded about 124,000 cancer cases and 72,000 deaths in 2021.

Over 100 people confirmed dead as earthquake rattles Turkey, Syria

A magnitude of 7.8 earthquake hit southeast Turkey and Syria early Monday, killing no fewer than 100 people and toppled buildings.

The toll according to the Turkish media is expected to rise.

Damage was reported across several Turkish provinces, and rescue teams were being sent from around the country.

At least 130 buildings tumbled down in Malatya province, Gov. Hulusi Sahin said. Authorities there retrieved three bodies and about a hundred people have been hospitalized, he said. That brought the death toll in Turkey to at least 18.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Twitter that “search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched” to the areas hit by the quake.

“We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage,” he wrote.

There were at least six aftershocks, and people were urged not to enter damaged buildings due to the risks, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said.

“Our priority is to bring out people trapped under ruined buildings and to transfer them to hospitals,” he said.

In Syria, Dr. Muheeb Qaddour said the northwestern town of Atmed had at least 11 deaths.

He added that others are buried under the rubble. He said: “We fear that the deaths are in the hundreds.”

A mother and child were killed in Idlib province, Syria, according to the Syrian American Medical Society.

The opposition’s Syrian Civil Defense described the situation in the rebel-held region as “disastrous,” adding that buildings have collapsed and people are trapped under the rubble.

The civil defense urged people to evacuate buildings and gather in open areas.

The earthquake came as the Middle East is experiencing a snowstorm that is expected to continue until Thursday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, felt as far off as Cairo, was centered about 20 miles from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital. It was about 16 miles from the town of Nurdagi.

It was centered 11 miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A strong 6.7 temblor rumbled about 10 minutes later.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management agency, AFAD, said the quake measured 7.4 and was centered in the town of Pazarcik, in Kahramanmaras province.

In Sanliurfa, at least 10 deaths have been confirmed, according to Gov. Salih Ayhan.

Several buildings tumbled down in the neighboring provinces of Malatya, Diyarbakir and Malatya, HaberTurk television reported. There was no immediate reports on casualties.

Turkey sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes.

The quake was also felt in Lebanon and Syria.

Syria’s state media reported that some buildings collapsed in the northern city of Aleppo and the central city of Hama.

In Syria’s rebel-held northwest that borders Turkey several buildings collapsed, according to the opposition’s Syrian civil Defense.

In Damascus, buildings shook and many people went down to the streets in fear.

The quake jolted residents in Lebanon from beds, shaking buildings for about 40 seconds. Many residents of Beirut left their homes and took to the streets or drove away.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties in either country.

Some 18,000 were killed in powerful earthquakes that hit northwest Turkey in 1999.
