The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has ordered the arrest and subsequent prosecution of all individuals engaged in the sale or abuse of the naira notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday, the directive is in furtherance of the Federal Government’s policy and drive to uphold the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007, and dignify Nigeria’s currency.

The IGP ordered the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department and the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau to place officers and men of the Department and the Bureau across the nation on high alert.

“Police and Commissioners of Police in charge of Police Commands and Formations to carry out full enforcement of the provisions of Sections 20 and 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 which criminalizes amongst other things the hawking, selling or otherwise trading, spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira notes, falsifying or counterfeiting of bank notes, refusal to accept the Naira as a means of payment, tampering with the coin or note issued by the CBN.

Scarcity of naira notes to be resolved within week— Buhari assures APC governors

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday urged citizens to give him seven days to resolve the cash crunch that has become a problem across the country from the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to change high value Naira notes with new ones.

He was speaking to the Progressive Governors Forum who came to the Presidential Villa to seek solutions to the cash crunch which they said was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy.

President Buhari said the currency re-design will give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits while expressing doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy. “Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves”, said the president, “even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away.”

He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people and gave assurances that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension will be used to crackdown on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation.

“I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the president assured.

The governors told the president that, while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good and they are fully in support, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset.

They told the president that, as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming. They requested the president to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year.

The president said when he considered giving the approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes will be printed in a foreign country and they in turn gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs. He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening.

President Buhari told the governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and will act in a way that there will be a solution.

New naira notes: : Buhari meets APC governors today

The governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday ahead of the presidential election scheduled for February 25.

The APC Presidential Campaign Council revealed this on Thursday via a tweet that the discussion will focus on the redesigning of the naira and fuel scarcity.

The two issues have heightened Nigerians’ resentment with the ruling party.

“On the agenda of the governors are issues of the nationwide fuel scarcity and the new Naira notes that have caused social and economic stress for Nigerians especially small businesses who rely on daily cash transactions,” the post reads.

The redesigning of some bank notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the short deadline have pitted some members of the ruling party against the administration in recent weeks.

On Wednesday, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai accused some elements in the Presidency of conspiring against the ruling party’s electoral victory.

El-Rufai  also distanced the APC from some of the current administration’s policies.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to allow both the old and new naira notes to co-exist to ease the suffering of Nigerians.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State, said the request was made to the president when the APC governors met with him on Friday.

The Kaduna governor added that the president did not decline or approve the request.

The meeting was held at the council chambers in the presidential villa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to deliberate on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policy on the new naira notes.

The apex bank had initially fixed January 31 as the deadline for the use of old naira notes.

But it shifted the deadline as many Nigerians could not access the new N200, N500, and N1000 notes.

One Kaduna LGA’ll wipe out Anambra votes for Obi – El-Rufai

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has claimed that votes cast in one of the state’s Local Government Areas will cancel all votes cast in Anambra State for the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 presidential election.

El-Rufai described Obi as a Nollywood actor who cannot win the 2023 presidential election.

According to the Kaduna State Governor, the presidential race is between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

El-Rufai dismissed Obi’s popularity, saying he’ll only get votes in the South-East and some parts of the South-South.

In an interview with TVC, El-Rufai said only one Local Government Area in Kaduna will cancel votes in Anambra.

“Doing 70 percent in Anambra State does not mean somebody doing 10 percent in Kano is not better than you.

“Kano is 4 million votes…Yes, Peter Obi will sweep Southern States, he will do well in South-South, where else?” He queried.

El-Rufai added that Obi is not polling well in the South-West “other than a drop of ocean in Lagos”.

“He is polling in Christian enclaves in the North, but how many are they?” the governor quipped.

The LP flagbearer was governor of the State for eight years under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform.

Naja’atu Mohammed: When the handwriting becomes clear

It would take so much more than paid trips from one TV station to the other and from one campaign stage to another to undo the enigma that is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But for a person like Najaatu Mohammed, once she partakes in one’s endeavour and it births success, then she snaps and builds a firebrand of emotions to try to dismantle such a story of success that she was a part of. It happened with Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau after the miraculous success of 2003, and with Buhari after the 2015 victory. This is the tendency that she has carried and a toga on which she has travelled all of the years of her dimunitive politicking.

In Kano, most people take the statements of Hajia Najaatu with a pinch of salt as she has become the proverbial boy who cried wolf. She is reputed to say so much, with little substance, in squeaky high pitch tones and in repeated uncoordinated sequence. How she is always the sole knower of her cherry picked truths remains a mystery, because her accounts of stories are not known to ever carry credible corroboration. When a person gets indulged for so long, they being to imagine infallibility in their folly, but there comes a time when they strike the wrong sensitivity, then they feel the sting of a stark reality and get forcefully recoiled into their shell.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ex-Oil Sector Finance Guru, Ex-National Lawmaker, Former Governor of Lagos State, Consummate National Politician and APC Presidential Candidate is a man whose political sagacity, depth and acumen have been applauded even by his archest opponents. History cannot be re-written out of the bitterness of a dramatic persona like Hajia Najaatu, giving laughable stories claiming Asiwaju could not answer her question regarding his plans for the North. One can see how intensely she has pushed the narrative of her meeting Asiwaju in London with so much scorn as that is all she can show even after auditioning so much for prominence in the PCC. In hindsight, the PCC in its wisdom ensured that prominence would be gained through demonstrable capacity and substance, not via fabricated stories and a career-long history of emotional fire-spitting.

For every thousand members of the opposition that raise false concerns about the state of health of Asiwaju, there are few patriotic neutrals with genuine questions, and for the benefit of such nationalists, we restate the avowed mental and physical readiness of Asiwaju to mount the saddle of Nigeria and dare the odds by squarely facing the problems that bedevil the country. The man is on the most daunting and exhausting campaign train across the country, religiously abiding by the schedule and maintaining an amazing capacity to lead private and public stakeholder engagement sessions. Once we see people like Najaatu discussing “firmness of grasp of a tea cup” as issues that matter in a Presidential Contest, we are comforted by their exit from our midst. As there is no room for such trivial discourse at a time when our mount of the country’s leadership saddle is imminent, and our need is of minds that are focused, intellectually enhanced, versatile and unconventional.

It is easy for a discerning mind to predict array of actions of a person, especially when their politics in renowned to be transactional. As the issues raised around Asiwaju’s health have become stale and with Nigerians growing even more uninterested in such hogwash, Hajia Naja’atu has faced the shrinking crowd with tales of Asiwaju inducing APC Governors to get the party’s Presidential ticket. As the aforementioned also evaporated quickly and with the crowd asking probing questions, she started to wander her fires to the direction of the legendary Mahmud Jega, whom she accused of recently acquiring a house in Abuja, after which I have wondered under what section of the law such a private citizen would be penalised.

It is obvious that the saliva in the mouth is drying up, the squeakiness is getting stiffer and the high-pitch of the tone lessens all because the impact of the attacks on Asiwaju’s person is not piercing the right holes. Even the opposition is sulking at the flop the expected fire brand has resulted in. Having granted Hajia Najaatu space on stage to perform the pre-auditioned opera, yet people see through the antics and recall same woman selling Buhari so covetously in 2003 & 2007, lambasting Buhari in 2011 while promoting the ACN, and in 2003 fiercely vilifying the Atiku that she today claims is messiah of the North.

The handwriting on the wall is absolutely clear that Asiwaju will work only with those capable of delivering value, enabling national cohesion and driving a unification agenda for Nigeria. Those whose politics is reputed to be about denigrating accomplished personalities and spitting ethnic bias whenever convenient will not gain desired prominence. As indigenes of Kano, and ambassadors of an enormous heritage, only the best of us will lead us, speak for us and represent us in the march to deliver the most promising Nigeria of our lifetime, one to be led by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Jagaban Borgu.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed commercial banks to begin the payment of the new naira notes to customers over the counter.

This is according to a statement signed by the Bank’s Director, Corporate Communications Osita Nwanisobi, on Thursday, saying that it is part of moves to ameliorate the plight of Nigerians who are finding it hard to get the new notes.

“In line with this resolve, the Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has directed deposit money banks (DMBs) to commence the payment of the redesigned Naira notes over the counter, subject to a maximum daily payout limit of N20,000,” the statement added.

While admitting the difficulties Nigerians have faced in trying to get money Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), the apex bank reassured of its commitment to making the process seamless.

It also vowed to prosecute racketeers of the new naira notes, saying it is working with relevant agencies to make that happen.

“We have equally noticed the queues at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across the country and an upward trend in the cases of people stocking and aggregating the newly introduced banknotes they serially obtain from ATMs for reasons best known to them. Also worrisome are the reported cases of unregistered persons and non-bank officials swapping banknotes for members of the public, purportedly on behalf of the CBN,” it warned.

“We wish to state unequivocally that, contrary to the practice of these unpatriotic persons, it is unlawful to sell the Naira, hurl (spray), or stamp on the currency under any circumstance whatsoever.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (As amended) stipulates that ‘spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both,” the statement said.

Kwankwaso denies talks with Atiku, accuses other candidates of laziness

Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has claimed that he is not  planning a merger with any political party ahead of February’s presidential election.

Kwankwaso, was reacting to a claim by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar that he is in talks the NNPP presidential flagbearer, expressed his surprise at PDP candidate for fabricating lies.

Kwankwaso says there is no truth in such claims.

“We are not going to go into discussion with anybody. From now till the 25th, no discussion with any party whatsoever,” the former Kano State governor said during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

Kwankwaso, one of the frontrunners for the February poll, however, says a possible merger might happen if the election goes into a run-off.

“But after the first election, if need be, of course, we would discuss with people,” he added.

According to him, the NNPP is making inroads in major parts of the country which he believes is enough to give his party victory when Nigerians head to the ballot.

“My discussion now is with the voters. We have been going now from village to village,” the NNPP flagbearer maintained.

“People were receiving us in all the villages and towns across the country. We believe we are the people on the ground,” the former lawmaker said.

“All these guys that are flying from one city to the other don’t even know what the problems that people are having in this country.”

He accused other contenders of not doing enough to woo voters across Nigeria, describing them as “weak and lazy politicians”.

The former governor of Kano State, expressed confidence in his party’s ability to prevail in the upcoming general election, citing the quality of their candidates and the party’s support base among Nigerians.

He also asserted that the misinformation surrounding the allegiance talk has revealed the importance of the NNPP and his candidacy.
